What is Sea Freight?

 

Sea Freight is a way of transporting large amounts of goods using carrier ships. Carrier shipswill transport goods from the dispatch point to the destination through seaports or transshipment ports.

This form of transportation is suitable for areas or countries with various seaports and long sea routes. Container ships are typically large in terms of size and tonnage, that is why this type of shipping is mainly applied to export/import items with a large amount of transported goods or bulky, oversized, overloaded items.

Types of Sea Freight services

Divided into 2 main categories:

Full Container Load (FCL):

FCL is an ocean shipping term wherein the Shipper (seller/exporter) has enough freight to fill a full container. To explain, if the Shipper (seller/exporter) wants to stuff his goods within one full container load, they book an FCL (Full Container Load). In an FCL cargo, one shipper owns all of the goods in the whole container. The shipper (seller/exporter) will receive a "Master Bill of Lading" from Carriers or a "House Bill of Lading" from the Forwarder.

Less than Container Load (LCL): 

It refers to situations when the volumes or dimensions do not take up the entire space of a container. The shipper has the option of shipping LCL, which combines their package with other smaller packages. This is also called a consolidated container,where several smaller shipments are combined & shipped together in the same container. To make it easier for consumers to transfer goods, logistics companies usually offer a Consolidation Service too.

The procedure for Sea Freight service:

Hai Viet logistics will receive the customer's requests & book transportation with shipping lines on requests then notify the customer of the freight charge.

“Port to port” delivery:

- Customers are responsible for packing and transporting goods to the port. Concurrently prepare Customs Declaration for their export cargoes.

- Throughout the freight process, we will monitor and update the status of the package.

- When the goods arrive at the destination port. The consignee has to contact the shipping line or agent to pick up the goods.

“Port to door” delivery:

- Customers are responsible for packing and transporting goods to the port. Concurrently prepare Customs Declaration for their export cargoes.

- Throughout the freight process, we will monitor and update the status of the package.

- When the goods arrive at the destination port. Agents at Hai Viet's port of destination will take care of the procedures for receiving and transferring goods by agreement (do customs clearance, pay taxes (if any), pick up the goods and deliver to the warehouse).

“Door to port” delivery:

- Hai Viet will take responsibility for taking care of all steps before the goods are transferred to the ship (prepare customs declaration, packing and unloading cargoes at the port, ..) and update the status of the package throughout the delivery of the order.

- When the goods arrive at the destination port. The consignee has to contact the shipping line or agent to pick up the goods.
